Nutritional healing, the A – Z guide to supplementsDespite not subscribing to supplementing my diet anymore, I still enjoyed reading this weighty book that covers some 350 dietary supplements available today. Obviously this number will keep growing as we continue to discover more.Nutritional Healing is an easy to use logical guide to the world of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, amino acids, enzymes, antioxidants, and herbs etc. that are included in any high street drug store. The book also including recommended dosage, when to take then and in what combination. It also touches on which food sources they may be obtained from. There is some information on nutrition generally; also what constitutes a micro or a macro nutrient and discusses in detail our main requirements for water, carbs, fat and proteins. It also covers how drugs i.e. antibiotics interfere with absorption of food and the balance of normal intestinal flora. Finally, the role of cooking was explored because that too affects assimilation of supplements.

Water fasting therapeutically for regeneration and rejuvenation is the best gift you can give yourself. With growing excitement, I juice feasted for 8 days, emptied the fridges and was good to go having done a huge amount of physical and mental preperation to ensure a successful water fast. Day 1 – Busy day in home office with work I was unable to reschedule with a mid day sunbathing break. Spa session then bed. When water fasting it is important to drink quality water and distilled is often recommended. I have a water distiller so intended sipping 1 – 2 litres of water daily. Day 2 – Disturbed night. Morning in office. Sunshine break, then bed rest as advised. Light headed, shaky and surprised that my water fast made me feel so weak so quickly. Tummy grumbling but no hunger. Day 3 – Poor sleep. Grateful for ½ hr mid day sunshine. Spent the day in bed, couldn’t be bothered to do much. Happy not to feel any hunger. So far so good, water fast is quite comfortable. Day 4 – Didn’t sleep well at all. Feel pretty rough today. Luckily, I don’t have hunger to deal with as well. My mouth tastes slightly of onion. Snow came thick and fast today so very cold. Body temperature drops naturally when water fasting so must stay warm. Day 5 – Frustrated with lack of sleep. I thought water fasting would make me tired and sleep like a baby but that isn’t my experience so far. Bed rest most of the day. Got acid reflux. Not thirsty but made myself sip water throughout the day. Day 6 – No sleep. Did all my measurements today to give me something to focus on and stay motivated about my water fast. Also tried on summer clothes but it was exhausting so went back to bed for the day. Day 7 – No sleep again! Had a shower but even that exhausted me. Had a reassuring 90 min Q&A Skype session with Loren Lockman afterwards went back to bed relaxed enough to have a nap. Noticed a slight runny nose. Day 8 – Got some sleep. Disaster, kitchen is flooded due to frozen pipes. I feel sick and my heart is pounding with the exertion of clearing up. Weight loss is slow so glad it’s not the only objective of a water fast! Can’t be bothered to do anything else today, slept this afternoon. Day 9 – Disrupted sleep but less stressed about it. Had to do a food shop and collect Robert who returned from the States not ideal on a water fast. Good job I feel stronger today but it was still tiring. Day 10 – Reasonable sleep. Upper part of my body slimmed down, but plenty of reserves waist downwards so happy to continue with water fast. Spent the day in bed, even had a nap. Still not hungry but tummy is rumbling like crazy. I feel ‘parched’ no matter how much water I sip. Day 11 – Better sleep. Weakness continuing but no hunger which kept me motivated. Loosing interest in sipping water. The weakenss is probably one of the hardest parts of water fasting. Day 12 – Passed several water fasting milestones day 1,3,5,7,10 and next is day 14 and 21 – never even considered water fasting past 14 days, but today I’m thinking it could be a reality. If I do go for 21, then I’ve passed the half way mark which is quite motivating. Day 13 – Even when I wake up feeling strong, when I’m actually up and about, I soon realise water fasting zapps me of virtually all energy. Have developed what is called ‘cotton mouth’. Day 14 – Not much weight loss, good job I have 25 objectives other for water fasting, am very pleased about inch loss though, feeling tired but can’t sleep. My skin is really drying out. Day 15 – Tummy quite painful today with what I assume are shrinking contractions, felt I could have given in today as I really don’t like this feeling and no amount of water is helping. Water fasting isn’t for the faint hearted! Day 16 – Dozed all night, woke feeling tired so stayed in bed until mid pm. Had a mini spa session then back to bed, mild acid reflux and tummy still rumbling like crazy. Water fasting is easier than dieting though. Day 17 – Difficult to sleep as my tummy is painfully contracting. Starting to feel bored and frustrated to be missing out on family life downstairs. I feel so weak but refuse to let weakness, tummy pain or cotton wool mouth stop me completing a successful water fast at this stage! Day 18 – Can see the end in sight and not a moment too soon, I’ve had enough of water fasting. I found the first 7 – 10 days quite enjoyable and comfortable with the second half of this experience less so. Perhaps because it was easier on my own? Then there is Roberts cooking smells wafting upstairs and the lack of water facilities due to the frozen pipes. Anyway, feel mentally stronger today that I will stay the distance and complete my water fast. Day 19 – Poor sleep but feel energy is returning slowly. Seriously considered continuing my water fast for a further week but Robert won’t hear of it. Day 20 – Short sleep but woke refreshed. Had to go out today for tiles ready for plumber tomorrow. Tummy has gnawing pain again, otherwise, felt well today and water fasting is actually quite pleasant if it wasn’t for the tummy pain. Day 21 – ‘D’ day, under the right conditions, I feel mentally and physically I could continue water fasting for another week. I’ve already achieved more than I thought possible because I allowed myself to stop any time I wanted. Breaking my water fast Day 22 – Not sure why I waited other than the fact that I wasn’t actually hungry, I ate a tomato that evening and felt full afterwards. Day 23 onwards I continue to break my water fast with oranges and tomatoes which are apparently the best foods for the job. Not the juice, but the whole food to encourage the bowels to function properly again. As the days progress, I’ve had the odd green salad but am mostly eating fruits or drinking green juices. So my diet is 100% plant high water based raw foods. I’m taking the recommended 1 day for every two days water fasting so that means 10 days or so to before resuming a ‘normal’ diet. For those who want to read a more detailed account of my water fast that includes the following information My journey Principles of natural hygiene (NH) How i mentally and physically prepared How I motivated myself throughout My 25 aims and objectives of water fasting My water fast experience in full How I broke my water fast Benefits of a supervised fast Weekly statistics Summary of observations / healing crisis My expectations versus the reality of this experience Benefits of water fasting What’s next Appendices To read my full experience see http://www.amazon.co.uk/Water-Fasting-day-experience-ebook/dp/B00C8T4LUQ/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1365521781&sr=8-14&keywords=dawn+campbell

By TC Fry & D Klein ‘Junky foods make junky bodies!’ This is a modern day natural hygienist book and focuses on the ideal diet for our anatomy and physiology, namely fruit, leafy green vegetables, nuts and seeds. This low fat diet is ideal for anyone seeking to loose weight deal with niggling health issues (high blood pressure / cholesterol) overcome disease like diabetes find a wellness diet / lifestyle rejuvenate themselves and regain their natural youthful vigour and zest for life. Chapters include subjects such as nutrition; what causes disease; how to transition to a healthier diet; healthy eating guidelines and of course, recipes to get you started. Not least the book is about proving to readers on a Standard American Diet (SAD) that a raw vegan frugivore diet is and always has been our natural diet. It is only because we have veared so far from this path that the vast majority of the population have now relinquished responsibility for their health. Consequently, they tend to be malnourished, overweight and diseased and are therefore, eating themselves into an early grave. It’s not that hard to turn back the clock either for those who wish to regain control. A simple step to get started would be to cut out stimulants i.e. drugs, cooked food, food that isn’t even whole natural foods anyway (you know what they are pizza, burger, chips, crisps, cake, coffee etc.). This book will help you recognise the signs of declining health; it even provides a transition plan with its SAD to RAW plan in 3 weeks as well as answers lots of common questions about salt, protein, calcium, fructose, B12, soy and more. It also covers food combining. Eating healthily isn’t rocket science; most of us know some of this stuff already. Sadly, too many wait until disease comes knocking on the door before being prompted into practicing better eating and lifestyle habits. Don’t wait, read this book and others like it and get proactive about your health because if you don’t know-one else will. After all, if you don’t look after your body, you’ll have no where else to live!

By H Shelton I’ve been studying Natural Hygiene (NH) for some time and water fasting is just one of the NH principles of good health. When I read this book, it really gave me the confidence to finally conduct water fast and put aside my anxieties from previous less successful water fasts. This book is ideal reading for anyone ready to take the necessary steps to reclaim their health and vigour. Also ideal for anyone who wants to stop carrying around the burden of excess weight, improve their digestion, recognise or deal with a disease, or just regain peace of mind. Generation after generation throughout history have known the benefits of water fasting and now it seems to be regaining popularity with health seekers. I was interested to read chapters about living without eating and how no-one ever died by missing 1 square meal a day (or more)! Also I learnt the difference between water fasting and starving and how to recognise which was which. Although well intentioned, we’ve developed wrong ideas about what the body needs during illness. Instead of the ‘chicken soup for the soul’ mentality of keeping up our strength during illness, what we really need is to get out of the body’s way. Doing this ensures the process of healing the cause commences. The only sure way to do this is to water fast. Therefore, it’s vital that nothing suppressing any symptoms being experienced is taken (drugs, herbs, food etc.) otherwise we’re restricting the body’s capacity to heal the root cause. During this time, it’s also important to allow the body complete bed rest until well again – just like every other species in the animal kingdom instinctively knows how to do! I also learn about distinguishing the difference between hunger and appetite; how water fasting differs to juice feasting as well as how to prepare for a water fast, what to expect during a water fast, the healing crisis and more importantly, how to break a water fast. Interestingly, I learnt how water fasting can help people actually gain weight as well as overcome many acute chronic diseases. Additionally, when to use water fasting to treat ailments like the common cold, migraine, fever, blood pressure, gall stones and many more illnesses. One of the most interesting lessons I learnt that I found to be true was to do with the benefits of water fasting over dieting. When we diet, we tend to have a mindset of deprivation, always craving our next morsel and obsessing about the end goal. It’s almost like being relentlessly teased. Consequently, following a diet the goal is typically celebrated by a binge of sorts that often quickly escalates. The end result being that most people regain their lost weight, sometimes even more and so a vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting evolves. However, when water fasting, the mind behaves differently. It knows there is no food coming so tends to switch off. Hunger typically tends to subside within 24 – 48 hours. Internal resources from the digestive tract and liver sustain the body and so weight loss is basically water and toxins which are released in the 1st 3 days of water fasting. Following which, the body goes into ketosis and looks for resources in fat stored in cells. Thereafter further weight loss is fat and toxins. Consequently, the whole experience is so much more comfortable. Of course it all depends on a persons starting point. The more overweight a person is, the more weight they’ll loose; the more diseased and toxic one is, the more uncomfortable their experience will be while the body is eliminating. You can’t expect to undue years of poor diet and lifestyle habits in one water fast. However, every fast gets easier as less severe detoxification is required. Hunger isn’t accumulative. Therefore, following a water fast, unlike a diet, there is no sense of needing to make up for lost meals especially if breaking the water fast is carefully observed during which time, appetite is gradually rebuilt and new eating habits are formed. So to summarise, some of the keys to a successful water fast are to do with thorough preparation (both mentally and physically), taking plenty of bed rest, abstaining from sensory activities, keeping warm (body temp drops when water fasting), sipping distilled water as thirst demands it, bathing in warm water to help eliminate toxins, absorb any available sunshine, don’t worry if there are no bowel movements and don’t water fast if fearful or anxious, water fasting is supposed to be rewarding and fear will only spoil the healing experience.

Choose at least 4 different types of fresh seaweed for texture and colour from a health store fridge for this raw food recipe. I’ve never collected it fresh from the beach myself but if you have access to a clean one, why not. Just be careful to choose from a really good quality source particularly bearing in mind sea pollution levels are increasing. So there’s a decision to be made whether or not the benefits of all those special minerals your body gains from out ways the risks of the pollution or not?@! Once you’ve made your choice for this raw food recipe, wash your seaweed thoroughly in a deep colander (and repeat and repeat) in filtered running water. Obviously it is incredibly salty, so if you don’t do this properly, it will ruin your pate. Just taste it and you’ll know when it’s ready. Ring it out to minimise water content. Then put into a food processor until it becomes finely chopped depending on how fine or coarse you like your pate. Set aside in a large mixing bowl. Now put the following into a food processor – a dozen or so small gherkins, a small jar of drained capers, a couple of cloves of garlic, a peeled and cored apple and a large red onion (all optional, just use the amount to suit your own taste). When you have a fine pulp, add it to the dish of seaweed. Next add fresh apple juice and or organic cider vinegar until you have a silky smooth pate with a nice spreading consistency. This liquid will help preserve this raw food recipe. Optional – add a dash of chili oil if you like your pate to have a kick. If not, just add a quality oil like Dr. Udos for omega 3, 6 & 9 which makes the pate creamy. Stir the mixture thoroughly and store in an large air tight glass jar in the fridge. It will last for months if you don’t find yourself snacking on it too often! Enjoy this raw food recipe on a range of raw veggie, seed crackers, pita breads, toast, chips, potatoes etc. it makes a great starter, is highly nutritious and it’s never failed to totally converted tasters once they get past their preconceptions of what raw seaweed will taste like.

As you’ll know from my Dec. newsletter our retreat was closed for the festive period. We’ve returned safely and it’s now business as usual. As I’m being asked ’how was it’ I thought I’d share my 16 day experience with you. We made some wonderful new veggie friends in one of the world’s loveliest areas cruising around the beautiful Caribbean islands. We selected a Fred Olson liner because it caters for the older market and we knew we’d be expertly looked after and we were Everything went like clock work from the moment we arrived at our hotel the night before departure, to car parking to passing through customs, to not handling our own luggage to the quality of the facilities (gym, sauna, spa – best reflexology ever, hairdressers, library, games room, bars etc.) nice sized cabin (cleaned twice daily) and all the staff who helped to make our cruise special. Exploring the islands more than anything was what it was all about for us. Most days we ended up creating our own taxi tours (Top Tip – thus saving a fortune in time and money on the official tours). We shopped for the usual tourist stuff (though St Maartin was a Mecca for jewellery and electronic shopaholics (Top Tip – conduct price comparisons before hand). We tried basic snorkelling in the barrier reef and loved it. We bathed in thermal springs under a double waterfall, climbed various mountains (when I say climbed, I mostly mean by taxi admired spectacular views including the twin Pitons in St Lucia. We stopped on the roadside daily for sugar cane; black baby pineapple and fresh coconut water/flesh all firsts for us and generally had a ball. Someone asked me if I got much rest on the cruise and I had to admit, more than I bargained for. I lost a few days feeling sea sick (Top Tip – check how many days are at sea rather docked at an island). Bed rest meant I missed quite a few meals! Consequently, I’m probably the only person to come off a cruise lighter than when I went on it! Also, the routine is surprisingly tiring; waking up every morning at 6-7am as the ship docked (Top Tip – there are lots of things like that to consider when selecting your cabin), breakfasting at 8am, being out on tour by 10am and in the heat all day, getting ready for dinner at 6.15pm, watching a show at 9pm (Top Tip – you have to consider your sittings on a small liner because the 2nd sitting would make bedtime very late). I’ve not lived by the clock so much since I was working corporately. On reflection, we didn’t allow ourselves enough time to relax doing nothing (Top Tip – factor in time to chill, reading and float – well perhaps float isn’t the right word as we were mostly floating but you know what I mean). Sad to say, as a high raw vegan I found the food disappointing. I ordered my food daily which was tedious and a bit hit and miss (Top Tip – sort this out in advance – being told you’ll be well catered for by your booking agent is not good enough). I usually had pineapple for breakfast, salad for lunch and my raw or cooked vegan order for dinner. Bearing in mind we were on an all inclusive package we still got value for money because my other half (aka the cooked dude) made up for me! He enjoyed cooked breakfasts, a reasonable selection at lunch, loved his mega cake and sandwich feast at tea time (in case he felt faint before dinner!) and a lightish (cough!) 4/5 course veggie dinner, sadly though, all that sea air made him too tired to have supper so he missed out there (Top Tip – pace yourself ha ha Dinner was always a glamorous affair when everyone scrubbed up pretty good proving you’re never too old to bring on the bling! Dinner was followed by entertainment which wasn’t really my taste, though I enjoyed the singer, magician and the comedian (Top Tip – check out who the guest entertainers are in advance in case it alters the dates you choose, for instance the cruise before us had Boney M). The weather was mostly too hot for our pale skins (Top Tip – take plenty of Aloe Vera for natural sun protection), there were still a fair few short hard showers but mostly at night and some choppy seas. In fact New Years Eve was too rough for the on deck party which had to be moved inside though the rough seas weren’t rough enough to stop the older generation partying. Apparently (I wouldn’t know I was in bed(!) they party as hard as youngsters do and that’s despite the fact many of them have walking sticks. Most guests were on champagne from breakfast (literally with their fry up!) till dawn and kept going the whole 16 days. I don’t know how they did it, but I know lots suffered with swollen legs, ankles and fee (and probably worse by the time they got home), they didn’t even stop drinking on the plane home. Being in the sun on a cruise liner that caters for the ‘grey market’ meant I saw a lot of, well how shall I say this, mature naked flesh (I thought women over a certain age didn’t wear bikinis)? Anyway, I found it kind of liberating that one evidently gets to an age where one doesn’t much didn’t care anymore what anyone else thinks – though I’m more motivated than ever now to workout ha ha! So, would I do it again, yes and no, it was certainly a great experience for our first cruise and I’d heartily recommend Fred Olsen as it’s a very civilized way to see the islands. However, if there is a next time, I’d say a) the food has to better for me, b) the entertainment more entertaining and c) I need to cruise on a much bigger liner which I’ve been assured is more stable when out to sea. Having said that, I know sea sickness is a bit like giving birth, as awful as it is at the time, once it’s over you soon forget meaning I’ll no doubt be giving cruising another go so watch this space

Who ever said you can’t maintain a healthy regime while travelling obviously wasn’t prepared. Remember the 5 P’s (Prior Preparations Prevents Poor Performance)? Well that’s the first Top Travel Tip – When you’re on the road be prepared. Advance planning will enable you to maintain your routine. Top Travel Tips – When travelling by plane always register with the airlines as ‘Asian Vegan’. This appears to be the only proven way of minimising any mistakes or preconceived ideas as to what a vegetarian actually eats. Top Travel Tips – When travelling abroad always check out the quality of water in taps, distilled drinks like juice and even ice-cubes to avoid spoiling your holiday with a dippy tummy. Top Travel Tips – where ever you’re eating be it a hotel or restaurant, make sure you’re really clear on your booking confirmation what your preferred diet is, it’s the only way of getting what you really want. Top Travel Tips – When cruising remember to request in advance that you’d like to dine with other veggies if you’d rather not spoil your own dining experience by sharing a table with people who eat animal products, or you’re not interested in being continually quizzed about your own diet. Top Travel Tips – When sight seeing find like-minded friends to club together and create your own tours by taxi which ensures you save a fortune in time and money on the official tours. Top Travel Tip – When shopping make sure you’ve conducted price comparisons before you buy that way, you won’t be tempted to make supposedly ‘bargain’ buys you regret later. Top Travel Tips – If you suffer with motion sickness suck dried pieces of ginger pre-soaked in lemon and black pepper. Top Travel Tips – When partying consider eating earlier rather than later to avoid sleeping on a full stomach which is never a good idea for the digestion. Also, pace yourself and watch your food and drink combinations. Top Travel Tips – Remember to factor time into your holiday to relax because doing nothing is still doing something or you’ll come back shattered. Top Travel Tips – Avoid sunburn by taking plenty of Aloe Vera for natural sun protection. If you do get burnt, find an aloe vera plant, cut open a leaf and rub the gel all over the burn. Top Travel Tip – Take your own holistic first aid kit and to minimise exposure to various norovirus strains; viral gastroenteritis and bacterial gastroenteritis take and use rinse free hand wash constantly. Top Travel Tips – To minimise food poisoning spray your food with colloidal silver or coriander oil and if you do get it, then take oregano oil to aid recovery Top Travel Tips – Don’t bring bed bugs home with you. Spray your bed and pillow with a mixture of tea-tree and lavender oil. Do your packing (and re-packing) without placing suitcases on the bed. If in doubt, wash everything on your return before returning belongs to the wardrobe. Also, have a fresh raw peeled onion put in your room to absorb airborne bacteria Top Travel Tips – Safety first always plan how best to evacuate yourself in the event of an emergency be it a hotel, a plane, a cruise etc. Make sure you know where the exits are and don’t forget to consider doing a trial run at night in the event an emergency happens at night when it’s dark and you’re disorientated from sleep. Top Travel Tips – Stay aware of personal security, especially your finances. Keep what you don’t need that day in a safe place. Wear a money belt to secure the bulk of your spending money and main credit card in the event you loose your bag or are mugged. Keep photocopies of your cards, licence, passport etc. with phone numbers so the right officials can be immediately contacted in times of need.

This raw cake recipe is so very tasty, it’s hard not to eat the mixture before the cake is ready to serve! Proving how quick and simple it is to make this raw cake recipe, I’ve been known to knock it up while unexpected guests wait for a cup of tea. Raw Cake Recipe Blend a couple of large carrots, a cupful of pitted dates and a generous amount of cinnamon and ginger (fresh ideally – both are great healing and warming herbs so ideal for use during the winter) and blend until you have a fairly smooth pulpy orange dough next in a food processor chop another carrot or two, a cupful of raisins/sultanas and a cup of walnuts – this is to create texture now mix the two mixtures (above) together taste test – this is when it’s hard not to eat the raw cake recipe mixture! when happy the taste is balanced and the texture is firm and even, press into a shallow serving bowl (suitable for cakes / flans) the cake is approx 1 1/2 inches thick put in the freeze to set while you make the topping Cream Recipe blend a handful of cashew nuts and 1 peeled orange until perfectly smooth and has a dollop consistency spread cream onto the cake now making the cake approx 2+ inches high decorate with either coconut shavings, grated orange zest, orange slices or walnuts put back into the freeze for no more than 30 mins to set. When you remove the raw cake, cut into it and serve as normal, you’ll be amazed how the slices stay together and it looks as good as it tastes so enjoy with some mulled raw spicy lemonade!

By R Freedman and Kim Barnouin It’s not just women who want to be uber sexy, slim, toned and more confident about their bodies. Men do too. So this review is especially for and just about blokes (though I think the women in their lives will enjoy this book to as it is quite funny even if the language is a bit rude at times Skinny Bastard educates while entertains the reader and I for one thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it’s a genius way of hitting the message home hard to those who need it most. The key message is whether or not you look like Brad Pitt ‘you only have one body to get you through a lifetime so stop eating crap and stop abusing your body, get off your ass and get ripped so chicks will dig you’. Sounds like good advice! Topics covered include but are not limited to Blowing the lid on diet food that are so called low or fat free for the chemical rubbish they really are. Ditto enriched or fortified foods – only Mother Nature knows best and we can’t fight that logic. All pills dietary, medicinal, body building or recreational drugs are toxic. Energy and mood swings are explored in the carbs section. Why sugar is like crack and food manufacturers know just how to keep you addicted. You’ll learn how to keep your ph balance in check. The high protein/low carb diet is simply BS – check out the diseases a meat and dairy diet create. Why we’re the only species that drinks milk as adults also the only species that drinks milk from another species – Yuk! The calcium myth. Dairy milk is not an efficient source for calcium, in fact, quite the opposite regardless of it being organic or raw. How to ward off insulin dependent diabetes. A good look at environmental and humanitarian issues to help you make the right food choices. The truth behind farmed fish, factory farmed meat, chicken, eggs, milk etc. no holds barred – not for the squeamish! How booze kills your brain cells – and your sperm count. The soy saga – Frankenstein foods – yep afraid so. How to stop being chronically dehydrated. Nutrients for athletes and fitness enthusiasts. The protein myth. Everything you can imagine and more is included to educate, encourage, empower and motivate you to change for the better. This book may shock, make you smile, make you wince with shame (but you’re in good company as we’ve all been there, done that and worn the t-shirt), good news is, it’s never too late to improve. Bottom line is you and only you are responsible for your health, not the government, not your parents (no blaming your genes), just you. What you eat and how much you move around determines the quality of your life and the body you have today and in the future. So if you’re not happy with the way your body looks and behaves or your life sucks, then do something about it. This book is the much needed kick up the ass that will help anyone wanting to change to improve their attitude for the better. Anyone who really wants to learn more about the subject of nutrition really needs to read The China Study by Dr. Campbell (review coming later).
